Food 4 the Soul: Hannah's Hens

I am excited about today's post. First, it is because I enjoyed preparing and eating this dish very much. Second, the biblical inspiration I received encourages me to this present hour. I entitled this dish "Hannah's Hens" in honor of her story found in I Samuel. It is a dish consisting of two Cornish hens served with a rice medley, which includes spinach, flax seeds, mushrooms, and onions. While preparing these two hens, I thought about how God will give us double for our troubles when we endure in His name. This is what God did for Hannah.

But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb. I Samuel 1:5

Because Hannah could not have children, her husband, Elkanah, gave her a double portion of good to compensate. However, we find in this account, that Hannah did not want stuff, she wanted offspring. To make things worse, her husband's other wife, Peninnah, taunted her because she could have children and Hannah could not. This troubled Hannah, but we discover at the end of this account that the Lord gave her a double blessing. Hannah not only had a son, Samuel, who became one of Israel's greatest prophets, but she also had other children after she dedicated Samuel to the Lord. Wow, what a gracious God who knows how to comfort us!

On today, I want to encourage those who have been waiting for the Lord to answer some prayers for some time and nothing has happened yet. It may seem that the adversary and also people around you may be taunting you or telling you not to continue to believe God for your requests. Just know that as God eventually heard Hannah's prayer, He will hear and respond to your heart's desires as well. Like Hannah, you can expect to and will receive a double portion as God remembers and comforts you for your toils and troubles during the wait.
